Today marks the 10th anniversary of *Bloodborne*, and the game's passionate fanbase is commemorating the occasion with another "Return to Yharnam" community event. Launched on March 24, 2015, for the PlayStation 4, FromSoftware's masterpiece not only received critical and commercial acclaim but also solidified the Japanese developer's reputation as one of the industry's best. Given its success, many expected a sequel or a current-gen remaster. Yet, despite fans' pleas, Sony has not produced a follow-up, remaster, or even a next-gen update to enable 60fps gameplay. This lack of action remains one of the most perplexing decisions in the gaming world.
Earlier this year, some clarity came from Shuhei Yoshida, a PlayStation legend who recently left Sony. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida shared his theory on why *Bloodborne* hasn't seen any updates. He emphasized that this was his personal opinion, not an insider's revelation. "Bloodborne has always been the most asked thing," Yoshida said. "And people wonder why we haven’t really done anything, even an update or a remaster. Should be easy, right? The company is known for doing so many remasters, right, some people get frustrated. I have only my personal theory to that situation. I left first-party so I don’t know what’s going on, but my theory is, you know because I remember, you know, Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, you know, what he created. So I think he is interested, but he’s so successful and he’s so busy, so he doesn’t want, he cannot do himself, but he does not want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respect his wish. So that’s my guess, right? Theory. I am not revealing any secret information, to be clear."Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware, has indeed been incredibly busy. Since *Bloodborne*, he directed *Dark Souls 3*, *Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice* for Activision, and the blockbuster *Elden Ring* for Bandai Namco. With multiple projects and a company to manage, Miyazaki's schedule is packed. In interviews, he often sidesteps questions about *Bloodborne*, citing that FromSoftware does not own the IP. However, he did acknowledge last year that the game could benefit from modern hardware.
In the absence of official updates, modders have attempted to enhance the *Bloodborne* experience. Yet, Sony has not looked kindly on these efforts. Lance McDonald, creator of a well-known 60fps mod, received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment four years after its release. Similarly, Lilith Walther, behind projects like *Nightmare Kart* and the *Bloodborne PSX demake*, faced copyright claims for old content. Meanwhile, tech enthusiasts using PS4 emulators like ShadPS4 have managed to achieve a 60fps experience on PC, as showcased by Digital Foundry. This advancement might have prompted Sony's aggressive response, though the company has not commented on the matter when approached by IGN.
With no official updates forthcoming, *Bloodborne* fans have taken matters into their own hands, organizing community events like today's "Return to Yharnam." Participants are encouraged to start fresh characters, summon co-operators and invaders, and leave in-game messages to signify their involvement. As the future of *Bloodborne* remains uncertain, these community-driven efforts may be the closest fans get to revisiting the haunting streets of Yharnam.
