Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following an initial teaser. The team delved into the faction's conceptualization, tracing its evolution from the initially considered "Inferno" theme to the final, more impactful "Swarm" concept, and its integration into the Jadame continent's narrative.
The Swarm's defining characteristic is its remarkable adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by the opposing unit's level; the greater the disparity, the more potent the damage inflicted. Others, like mantises, exhibit tactical flexibility, selecting from three distinct abilities each round. A notable survival mechanism is the ability of creatures such as worms and locusts to consume corpses for healing and enhancement – a skill also learnable by player heroes.
In Olden Era, the insectoid Swarm assumes the role of the demonic antagonist, a race only briefly mentioned in Might & Magic 8. While respecting established lore, the developers infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transcending a simple insect colony to become a cult devoted to a singular overlord. Each member forms part of a vast hive mind, existing solely to execute its master's commands.
Gameplay revolves around a "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players for utilizing exclusively Swarm units, as these units synergistically enhance one another. Furthermore, Swarm troops can summon cocoons, whose health directly correlates to the army's overall size. Upon hatching, these larvae provide temporary reinforcements, enabling dynamic battlefield adaptations.
The Swarm's aggressive playstyle is highlighted by its corpse-devouring healing and empowerment abilities, coupled with unique enemy-strength-dependent attacks. This creates a confrontational, direct combat strategy, offering players a novel and engaging approach to warfare.
