S-Game Clarifies Comments on Xbox Following ChinaJoy 2024 Controversy
Following reports from ChinaJoy 2024, S-Game, the developer behind anticipated titles Phantom Blade Zero and Black Myth: Wukong, has addressed a controversial statement attributed to an anonymous source. Several media outlets misrepresented comments, creating a significant stir.
The initial reports, stemming from a Chinese news source and amplified by outlets such as Aroged and Gameplay Cassi, suggested a Phantom Blade Zero developer had stated Xbox lacked market interest, or even that the platform was unnecessary. Gameplay Cassi's translation, in particular, was significantly stronger than the original statement.
S-Game's official response on Twitter(X) firmly refutes these interpretations. The statement emphasizes the studio's commitment to broad accessibility for Phantom Blade Zero, explicitly stating that no platforms have been excluded. They are actively pursuing development and publishing strategies to maximize player reach.
While S-Game neither confirms nor denies the anonymous source's identity, the underlying issue of Xbox's comparatively lower market share in Asia, especially compared to PlayStation and Nintendo, is undeniable. Sales figures in Japan highlight this disparity. Furthermore, limited retail availability in many Asian countries historically hampered Xbox's presence.
Speculation regarding an exclusive deal with Sony, fueled by previous comments about Sony's support, has also been addressed. S-Game has reiterated their plans for a PC release alongside the PlayStation 5 version, leaving the possibility of an Xbox release open. While not confirmed, S-Game's response clearly leaves the door ajar for future Xbox platform consideration.
