Lance McDonald, the creator of the popular Bloodborne 60fps patch, has announced he received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment. The notice demanded the removal of links to the patch, which McDonald has complied with. He highlighted the irony, referencing a past meeting with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida where he jokingly revealed his creation of the mod. Yoshida's reaction was reportedly laughter.
Bloodborne's continued absence from next-gen platforms is a significant point of contention among fans. While the game enjoyed immense critical and commercial success upon its PS4 release, Sony has yet to officially address calls for a 60fps patch, remaster, or sequel. This void has been partially filled by community efforts like McDonald's patch and recent advancements in PS4 emulation. Digital Foundry recently showcased a near-remaster quality experience at 60fps via ShadPS4 emulation, raising questions about whether this breakthrough triggered Sony's DMCA action. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.
Earlier this month, Yoshida offered his perspective on Bloodborne's inactivity in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He suggested that Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep personal attachment to the game, coupled with his current workload, prevents him from either updating it himself or allowing others to do so. Yoshida emphasized this was merely his theory and not based on confidential information.
Despite nearly a decade since its release, Bloodborne remains largely untouched. While Miyazaki often deflects questions about the game, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that a release on more modern hardware would be beneficial.
