Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation
Director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, recently offered an update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. While the project's development, initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, has spanned over a decade, Muschietti assures fans it's far from abandoned.
The director acknowledges the considerable time elapsed, attributing the delay to factors beyond creative control. He points to the complexities of adapting such a popular and visually ambitious game, citing ongoing discussions regarding the film's budget. Muschietti confirmed the existence of a preferred script among several versions.
This update comes amidst Sony's recent announcement of several other game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.
While other games, such as the 2024 RPG Dragon's Dogma 2, have drawn inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus, Sony's original remains a beloved classic. Muschietti, while not a self-described "big gamer," calls the game a "masterpiece" and has played it multiple times. He aims to capture the essence of Fumito Ueda's vision, who was involved in the early stages of the film's development and has since founded his own studio, GenDesign. GenDesign's upcoming sci-fi title, announced at The Game Awards 2024, hints at a continuation of the unique atmosphere found in the original Shadow of the Colossus. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the live-action adaptation seeks to expand the game's reach to both existing fans and new audiences.
