Monster Hunter Wilds directors unveil a thrilling new locale and formidable monster in an exclusive interview. Discover the Oilwell Basin and its fearsome ruler, the Nu Udra.
Monster Hunter Wilds Introduces the Black Flame, Nu Udra
Welcome to the Oilwell Basin
In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka introduce the Oilwell Basin, a unique vertical environment unlike any seen before in the series. Unlike the horizontally expansive Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, the Oilwell Basin boasts a layered structure. Fujioka explains, "The deeper you delve, the hotter and more magma-filled it becomes." The upper levels are swampy oil fields, transitioning to a volcanic heart.
Tokuda adds that the Basin transforms during the "Plenty" event. The lower levels resemble an underwater volcanic ecosystem, drawing inspiration from Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. "During the Fallow and Inclemency, smoke billows from the Basin like a volcano. But during the Plenty, it transforms into a clear, marine-like environment. The unique creatures inhabiting this area reflect this aquatic shift." These endemic species further enrich the Oilwell Basin's distinctive ecosystem, hinting at a seemingly lifeless landscape teeming with hidden life.
Nu Udra, the Black Flame
The Oilwell Basin's apex predator is the fearsome Nu Udra, a massive, octopus-like monster with a flammable, slimy body. Using its powerful tentacles to ensnare prey, it unleashes devastating fire attacks. Completing the elemental trio—following the lightning-wielding Rey Dau of the Windward Plains and the water-based Uth Duna of the Scarlet Forest—Nu Udra commands the power of fire.
Fujioka reveals the design inspiration: "I always wanted to include a tentacled creature. We took an aquatic creature and modified it for a more striking look." The demonic aesthetic, enhanced by horn-like head elements, is complemented by its unique battle music. Tokuda shares, "The composers incorporated elements reminiscent of black magic, resulting in a truly unique soundtrack."
Battles against Nu Udra are intensely challenging. Its numerous tentacles allow for both focused and area-of-effect attacks in rapid succession. Its immunity to Flash Bombs underscores its reliance on its tactile senses rather than sight.
More Monsters in the Basin
Nu Udra isn't alone. The fiery Ajarakan, a large, scaly, monkey-like monster, utilizes martial arts-inspired attacks and devastating fist-based moves. Its combination of brute strength and fire power makes it a formidable foe.
The Rompopolo, a strangely globular creature with needle-like mouthparts, employs toxic gases in combat. Its purple hue and glowing red eyes evoke a mad scientist aesthetic, an inspiration confirmed by the developers who describe it as a "tricky monster." Surprisingly, its rewards yield "cute" equipment for both hunters and Palico companions.
A familiar face returns: Gravio, from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, makes a comeback. Its rocky carapace, fiery breath, and association with volcanic regions make it a fitting inhabitant of the Oilwell Basin. Tokuda explains, "Considering its environmental suitability, role in the game's progression, and unique fighting style, we felt Gravios would offer a fresh challenge."
With these exciting reveals, anticipation builds for Monster Hunter Wilds' launch on February 28th.
