Avowed's Success Spurs Talk of Expansions and Sequels
Obsidian Entertainment and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with Avowed's sales performance, hinting at future plans for the franchise. In a recent Bloomberg interview (February 22, 2025), Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel expressed strong interest in developing expansions or a sequel. Patel highlighted the established world and experienced team as key assets for future projects, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Navigating Avowed's Development Challenges
Patel candidly discussed the complexities of Avowed's development, describing it as a "messy" process. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's potential sale, underwent significant changes, including a leadership shift and a game reboot in January 2021. The team streamlined the scope, shifting from a fully open world to open zones, and prioritized the rich lore of the Pillars of Eternity universe. Patel emphasized the eventual cohesion of the project, noting, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?
The resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise with Avowed has sparked interest in a new direction: a tactics game. Josh Sawyer, director of the original Pillars of Eternity titles, revealed during a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream that a "Pillars: Tactics" game is a possibility, although the scope and budget remain to be determined. Sawyer also reiterated his ambition to develop Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning a production budget comparable to Baldur's Gate 3.
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
