Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, initially planned to retire after Fantasian. However, the overwhelmingly positive experience of developing Fantasian Neo Dimension has inspired him to create another game, envisioned as a spiritual successor to the beloved Final Fantasy VI.
Final Fantasy Creator to Develop His Final (Again) Game
A Spiritual Successor to Final Fantasy 6
Following the success of Fantasian Neo Dimension, released in 2021, Sakaguchi revealed in an interview with The Verge his desire to create a new game inspired by Final Fantasy VI. He initially intended Fantasian to be his final project before retirement. However, the collaborative spirit and enjoyment of working with his team led him to embark on this new endeavor. He aims to create a game that feels both familiar and innovative, describing it as "part two of my farewell note."
Development of Sakaguchi’s Latest Project
In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Sakaguchi confirmed the project's development, stating that approximately a year after script completion, he anticipates reaching a significant milestone within two years. The June 2024 trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" fueled fan speculation about a potential sequel, although this remains unconfirmed. Sakaguchi hinted that the new project will maintain a similar fantasy RPG style to his previous works. Currently, no official title or detailed information has been released.
Reuniting with Square Enix for FANTASIAN Neo Dimension
Mistwalker partnered with Square Enix to bring FANTASIAN Neo Dimension to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch in December 2024. Initially released exclusively for Apple Arcade in 2021, Fantasian garnered critical acclaim, frequently cited as one of the platform's best games. Reflecting on the collaboration, Sakaguchi described the experience as "fascinating," given his career origins at Square (now Square Enix).
Sakaguchi joined Square in 1983, directing the first Final Fantasy title in 1987 and subsequent mainline entries, before serving as producer for Final Fantasy VI through Final Fantasy XI. He left the company in 2003, founding Mistwalker, where he oversaw titles such as Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. Fantasian, released in 2021, marked his most recent project before the FANTASIAN Neo Dimension enhancement in 2024.
Despite this recent partnership, Sakaguchi remains uninterested in revisiting the Final Fantasy series or his previous works, stating he has transitioned from creator to consumer.
