Disney veteran Jon Favreau is teaming up with Disney+ to bring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to the small screen in a new series. Favreau, known for his expertise in blending live-action and animation, will serve as both writer and producer. While plot details and casting remain under wraps, this project marks a significant step for Oswald, a character deeply rooted in Disney's history.
Oswald, originally created by Walt Disney, enjoyed a brief stint as Disney's mascot in 26 silent cartoons (1927-1928) before a rights dispute led to his departure and the subsequent creation of Mickey Mouse. Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006 and released a new short featuring the character in 2022. This new series signifies a larger commitment to Oswald's legacy beyond a simple nostalgic nod. A release date is yet to be announced.
Beyond this project, Favreau remains busy within the Disney universe, contributing significantly to the Star Wars franchise ( The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, Ahsoka) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His directorial credits also include the 2019 Lion King remake, and he's set to direct The Mandalorian and Grogu's theatrical release in 2026.
Interestingly, Oswald's recent cinematic appearance was in the 2023 horror film Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, starring Ernie Hudson. This release, coming just a year after Oswald entered the public domain, offers a stark contrast to Disney's upcoming, official project.
