Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, intervened in a dispute on the game's subreddit concerning a moderator's stance on AI-generated art. The situation, highlighted by Garbage Day and Rock Paper Shotgun, began with DrTankHead, a former moderator of the main Balatro subreddit and current moderator of its NSFW counterpart. DrTankHead had previously stated that AI art would be permitted, provided it was properly attributed and tagged, following a discussion with Playstack staff.
However, Localthunk contradicted this on Bluesky, clarifying that neither they nor Playstack endorsed AI-generated imagery. Localthunk subsequently issued a statement on the subreddit, announcing DrTankHead's removal from the moderation team and a ban on AI-generated images. The developer emphasized their opposition to AI art, citing its potential harm to artists. They pledged to update the subreddit's rules and FAQ to reflect this policy change.
Playstack's communications director followed up, acknowledging ambiguity in the previous rules regarding AI content and the need for clearer guidelines. The remaining moderators are working to improve the rule clarity.
DrTankHead, in a post on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, confirmed their removal and stated that while they don't intend to make the subreddit solely AI-focused, they are considering allowing non-NSFW AI-generated art on specific days. One user responded by suggesting a temporary break from Reddit.
The controversy highlights the ongoing debate surrounding generative AI in the gaming industry. This debate is fueled by ethical concerns, copyright issues, and the limitations of AI in producing high-quality, engaging content. Keywords Studios' failed experiment in creating an entirely AI-driven game serves as a cautionary tale. Despite this, major players like EA, who called AI "the very core" of their business, and Capcom, who are experimenting with AI for environment creation, continue to invest heavily in the technology. Activision's recent admission of using generative AI for some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 assets, amidst criticism over an AI-generated loading screen, further illustrates the complex and evolving relationship between the industry and AI.
