Sony's policy requiring PlayStation Network (PSN) tethering for PC games, even single-player titles, has sparked significant backlash among gamers. This restriction, coupled with regional limitations on service availability, has impacted the accessibility and sales of recent Sony game releases.
Recently, Sony announced modifications to this policy. While the concept of PSN tethering remains, certain relaxations will be implemented. Specifically, PSN tethering will become optional for the following games:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players who choose to tether their games to PSN will receive the following in-game bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest early in the game, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points to unlock features and other content.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In November, during an investor relations call, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the player resistance to PSN connection requirements. He emphasized the importance of these connections for security and order, framing the discussion around service-based games. However, he failed to clarify how this rationale applies to single-player experiences like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök.
Times are changing.
