High Demand for Pokémon TCG's Prismatic Evolutions Prompts Reprints
The Pokémon Company is responding to unexpectedly high demand for its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, by initiating a large-scale reprint. Initial reports of shortages emerged on January 4th, 2025, on the Pokémon TCG fan website, PokeBeach, highlighting difficulties for smaller US retailers.
The Pokémon Company acknowledged the issue on January 16th, 2025, stating that high demand impacted product availability at launch. A spokesperson confirmed that they are working to increase production to meet the overwhelming consumer interest.
The scarcity particularly affected smaller, independent stores. Distributors limited supplies to 10-15% for local retailers, while larger chains like GameStop and Target received significantly larger allocations. This uneven distribution led to limited stock at many local game stores.
The shortage has already driven up prices on the secondary market. The Elite Trainer Box, for example, is being sold for significantly more than its retail price. However, it's anticipated that increased supply will eventually stabilize prices.
Originally announced on November 1st, 2024, with a launch date of January 17th, 2025, Prismatic Evolutions features Tera Pokémon ex, new illustration rare cards, and reprints of popular cards with new artwork. Additional products, including a Surprise Box, Mini Tin, Booster Bundle, and Pouch Special Collection, are being released throughout 2025. A digital version of the set was also made available on January 16th, 2025, via Pokémon TCG Live.
While the initial launch faced challenges, the Pokémon Company's commitment to reprinting the set offers reassurance to collectors and players eager to obtain this highly sought-after expansion.
