Doug Cockle, the voice of Geralt in the acclaimed Witcher video game series, reprises his iconic role in Netflix's animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. Unlike the live-action series, Cockle wasn't asked to emulate Henry Cavill or Liam Hemsworth's portrayal, allowing him to maintain the distinctive gravelly voice he perfected over nearly two decades.
His journey began in 2005, voicing Geralt for the first Witcher game. The low register required intense vocal work, often resulting in a sore throat after eight to nine-hour recording sessions. This rigorous process, however, strengthened his vocal chords, akin to an athlete training their muscles.
The release of Sapkowski's books in English significantly impacted Cockle's performance. Initially relying on the developers' descriptions of Geralt as "emotionless," reading The Last Wish provided a deeper understanding of the character's emotional landscape, informing his nuanced portrayal. Cockle particularly enjoyed Season of Storms, expressing a desire to voice Geralt in an adaptation of that story.
Sirens of the Deep, based on the short story "A Little Sacrifice," offers a dark twist on The Little Mermaid. While the film features intense action and political intrigue, Cockle appreciates the lighter moments, highlighting a humorous exchange between Geralt and Jaskier as a showcase of Geralt's often-overlooked softer side. He relishes the opportunity to portray Geralt's multifaceted personality, from his serious demeanor to his clumsy attempts at humor.
The anime presented a unique challenge: speaking Mermaid. Cockle found this incredibly difficult despite receiving phonetic spellings, highlighting the unexpected hurdles even experienced voice actors face.
Looking ahead, Cockle will return to the video game world in The Witcher 4, where Geralt will be a supporting character, with Ciri taking the lead. He's enthusiastic about this shift in perspective, believing it's a compelling narrative choice, particularly given events in the books.
