HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety suggests Lithgow is nearing a deal to secure the coveted role. This follows earlier reports naming Mark Rylance as a top contender for the part.
"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "During pre-production, we will only confirm casting decisions upon finalizing agreements."
Lithgow's extensive acting credits include The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his versatility and range.
Despite numerous reports indicating progress, the full cast remains undisclosed. HBO is actively seeking actors for the roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, having reportedly cast Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This is perhaps not unexpected given J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful rendering of the novels, aiming for a richer, more detailed narrative than the films allowed. Executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (the latter also known for Game of Thrones) will oversee the series' direction and writing.
