While Dynasty Warriors: Origins is renowned for its massive, chaotic battles against countless nameless soldiers, a compelling gameplay element from previous installments makes a triumphant return: duels. Let's delve into the mechanics of these intense one-on-one encounters.
What Are Duels in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Introduced in Dynasty Warriors 4, duels return after over two decades in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. While initially unavailable, you'll unlock the ability to duel in Chapter 2. However, not every enemy is worthy of a duel. You can only challenge high-ranking and prominent enemy officers. A brief window of opportunity will appear when encountering these officers; press R1 and L1 simultaneously to initiate the duel. This prompt is time-sensitive, so act quickly!
Once accepted, a temporary arena forms amidst the surrounding soldiers, setting the stage for your one-on-one showdown. Unlike standard battles, a duel features a progress bar at the top of the screen tracking both your and your opponent's success. Each successful hit on your opponent advances your meter, while their hits move theirs. The objective is to fill your meter completely by landing enough blows.
Your starting position in the duel isn't determined by your health, but by your overall morale. A winning streak will give you a head start, while losing will put you at a disadvantage. A balanced match will result in an even start. The one-on-one nature demands careful observation of your opponent's attacks, utilizing dodges and parries to mitigate damage and maintaining a safe distance when they unleash Battle Arts. Time is limited, but reckless aggression is ill-advised.
Victory in a duel delivers a significant blow to your opponent, along with a substantial morale boost for your army. Defeat, however, inflicts heavy damage and a considerable morale drop, potentially jeopardizing your battle progress. An inconclusive duel, however, results in neither positive nor negative consequences. Both combatants simply disengage, and the battle continues. However, be aware of inescapable duels; failure here results in immediate mission failure, while victory secures an automatic win. Therefore, while duels offer the potential to dramatically shift the tide of battle, underestimating your opponent can lead to disastrous consequences.
And that’s the essence of dueling in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
