Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is poised to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This article delves into its innovative tag-team mechanics and the recently available playable demo.
Redefining Tag-Team Dynamics: Duo Play and Beyond
2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, introduces a unique twist on the 2v2 formula with its Duo Play system. Unlike traditional tag fighters where a single player controls both characters, 2XKO allows two players to team up, each controlling a champion. This results in thrilling four-player matches, with each team comprising a Point character and an Assist character. The developers even demonstrated the possibility of 2v1 showdowns.
While only one player acts as the Point character, the Assist player remains crucial. The tag system incorporates three key mechanics:
- Assist Actions: The Point character can summon the Assist for powerful special moves.
- Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist characters seamlessly swap roles.
- Dynamic Save: The Assist can intervene to break up enemy combos.
Matches are designed to be longer and more strategic than in other tag fighters. Both players must be defeated to win a round, unlike games where a single knockout ends the match. Even defeated champions can still actively assist their teammate.
Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—synergy options that significantly alter team playstyles. The playable demo featured five Fuses:
- PULSE: Rapid attacks unleash devastating combos.
- FURY: Below 40% health, bonus damage and special dash cancel.
- FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
- DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
- 2X ASSIST: Empower your partner with multiple assist actions.
Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse System's role in enhancing player expression and facilitating impressive combos, particularly for well-coordinated duos.
Champion Selection and Alpha Lab Playtest
The playable demo featured six champions—Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi—each with movesets reflecting their League of Legends counterparts. While fan favorites Jinx and Katarina were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest (August 8-19), their inclusion in future updates has been confirmed.
2XKO, a free-to-play title launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025, is currently accepting registrations for its Alpha Lab Playtest. Further details can be found in the linked article.
