Preparing Children for Hospital Visits: "HC And - When mother or father has cancer"
Developed in collaboration with the Oncology Department at R. H.C. Andersen Children and Youth Hospital, Odense University Hospital, and families of hospitalized children, "HC And" offers patient information designed for children aged 4-7. Its goal is to ease anxiety by explaining common hospital terms in an accessible way.
"HC And - When mother or father has cancer" serves as an introductory course for young children, their families, and friends facing a cancer diagnosis. Presented through a child's narration and engaging animation, it utilizes a playful, interactive format suitable for tablets, mobile phones, and touchscreens.
Recognizing that children in this age group learn best through play and concrete examples, and that they can easily become overwhelmed with information, "HC And" employs short, age-appropriate segments. This allows children new to the situation to easily engage with the material.
The app features seven short, sequential stories addressing questions about cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Healthcare professionals can use "HC And" as an educational tool to build a shared understanding with young patients.
"HC And" is available for free download.
