The Witcher 4 Breakdown: How Ciri’s Combat Style Differs from Geralt’s

In The Witcher 4, a significant shift is underway: Ciri replaces Geralt as the protagonist, sparking considerable excitement and questions about how this impacts gameplay, especially combat. CD Projekt RED recently offered intriguing insights during a podcast episode.

One trailer scene showcases Ciri battling a monster, using a chain—a clever homage to The Witcher 1—to restrain it. However, her combat style is strikingly different from Geralt's. The developers described the contrast:

“There was this one scene where we see the chain, which is a tribute to The Witcher 1. When she grabs the monster’s head with it and pins it to the ground, she also performs an additional flip, which was really cool because you can’t imagine Geralt doing something like that. He’s very… I’d say he’s agile, but he’s also very… he feels almost like a ‘block’ in a way—he’s bulky and heavy. And she [Ciri] is just… she’s practically like liquid compared to [Geralt].”

This comparison perfectly encapsulates the difference. Geralt’s combat is about strength and precise strikes; Ciri’s is fluid, dynamic, and acrobatic. Her agility introduces a new level of excitement, a stark contrast to Geralt's grounded approach.

The Witcher 4's shift to Ciri promises a faster, more fluid combat experience reflecting her unique abilities. As CD Projekt RED reveals more, anticipation builds. Will Ciri's gameplay surpass Geralt's legacy? Only time will tell.
