Tony Hawk and Activision are Cooking Up Plans for THPS' 25th Anniversary“Skating Jesus” Adds Fuel to New Tony Hawk Game Announcement Speculations
Speaking on a recent episode of Mythical Kitchen on YouTube, legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk revealed there are plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the iconic Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater skateboarding game franchise coming up this month. "I've been talking to Activision again, which is insanely exciting. We're working on something—This is the first time I've said that publicly," he told Mythical Kitchen. However, further details were kept under wraps but Tony Hawk said that these plans "will be something the fans will truly appreciate."
The original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was released on September 29, 1999 and published by Activision. The franchise saw great commercial success and had come out with multiple sequels and entries throughout the years. In 2020, a remastered collection of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 (THPS1+2) games was released and, according to Hawk, there were plans for Pro Skater 3 and 4 to also get remastered.
However, the Pro Skater remaster project, being developed by the now-defunct studio Vicarious Vision at the time, was ultimately canceled. "I wish I could say we have something in the works," Hawk reportedly shared during a Twitch stream back in 2022, "but you know Vicarious Visions kind of got disbanded and Activision’s going through all their stuff. I don’t know what’s next." He added, "That was the plan, up until the release date of [1+2] we were going to do 3+4 and then Vicarious got absorbed and they were looking for other developers and then it was over."
THPS on ThreadsLeading up to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater's 25th anniversary day, the game's official social media accounts shared a new artwork of the game along with the caption: "Celebrating 25 years of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater all month long!" Later on, they announced a giveaway sweepstakes of the Collector's Edition of THPS1+2 remastered.
Following the recent developments, there has been growing speculation that a new Tony Hawk game could be announced in line with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’s 25th anniversary. Reports have also suggested that an announcement could be made during a Sony State of Play rumored to take place sometime this month. Nothing of the nature has been confirmed, however, and Hawk has not clarified whether it will be a new installment in the franchise or a continuation of the scrapped remastered project.
