Star Wars: Hunters, Zynga's first venture into the Star Wars universe, is set to close its doors just over a year after its debut on iOS and Android. Launched in June 2024, the game quickly captured attention with its unique blend of game show flair and innovative takes on Star Wars characters.
However, it has now been confirmed that Star Wars: Hunters will cease operations on October 1st of this year. A final content update is scheduled for release on April 15th. In the wake of this announcement, players can now request refunds for in-game currency, and certain seasonal events will be replayed as the third season is extended.
Fans eager to experience the last new character, Tuya, will be pleased to know that they can still play with them in multiplayer. Tuya will be introduced in the final content update and will be available to all players for free from the start.
This news has come as a surprise, as there were no clear signs that Star Wars: Hunters was struggling. Given Zynga's robust position in the industry, the decision to discontinue the game suggests deeper underlying factors. I speculate that the genre, a pseudo-hero shooter, may have been too saturated, and the target audience, traditionally older Star Wars fans, might not have been the right fit for a fast-paced mobile multiplayer experience.
