Sony to Remove PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus in 2024

Author : Amelia Apr 11,2025

Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus strategy, focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 games starting in January 2026. This change was revealed alongside the announcement of February 2025's monthly titles on the PlayStation Blog. As part of this transition, PS4 games will no longer be a primary feature of the PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog, though they may still appear occasionally.

This move won't impact the PS4 games that subscribers have already claimed through the service. However, PS4 titles in the Games Catalog will remain available until they are rotated out during the monthly refresh. Sony emphasized its commitment to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising continued evolution and optimization of benefits such as exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, and online game save storage. The company is eager to introduce new PS5 titles monthly to keep the service fresh and engaging for its users.

The PS4, launched in 2013 and succeeded by the PS5 in 2020, has seen a significant portion of its player base transition to the newer console. Sony noted that many players are now primarily engaging with PS5 titles, reflecting a broader shift in gaming preferences.

It remains uncertain whether Sony will relegate PS4 games to the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters from earlier PlayStation generations. More details on this aspect are expected to be shared closer to the implementation date.
