Konami's latest Silent Hill Transmission has brought fans an in-depth look at the much-anticipated Silent Hill f, an upcoming addition to the iconic horror franchise set in 1960s Japan. First announced in 2022, Silent Hill f was teased as a game that promises a "beautiful, therefore terrifying" world, penned by the renowned Japanese visual novel writer Ryukishi07, known for his work on the Higurashi and Umineko series. After nearly three years, the game's details are finally emerging, offering a deeper understanding of what players can expect.
Silent Hill f Aims to 'Find the Beauty in Terror' and Present Players With a Beautiful Yet Terrifying Choice in 1960s Japan
Konami unveiled a new trailer for Silent Hill f, along with a wealth of new details. The game aims to "find the beauty in terror" and challenges players with a significant, yet undisclosed, choice set against the backdrop of 1960s Japan. The narrative follows Shimizu Hinkao, an ordinary teenager whose life takes a dark turn when her town becomes enveloped in fog and transforms horrifically. As Shimizu, players will navigate a transformed town, solve puzzles, battle eerie enemies, and strive to survive to face this pivotal decision. This story is crafted to be welcoming to newcomers while still offering Easter Eggs for long-time fans of the series. The setting for Silent Hill f is the fictional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka, inspired by the real location of Kanayama, Gero, in the Gifu Prefecture. The game introduces new elements while staying true to the essence of Silent Hill. Creature and character designer Kera, a self-proclaimed fan of the Silent Hill series, shared insights into the game's design process:
"I love the Silent Hill series, and it's been a big influence on me," Kera explained. "Particularly, I am constantly reminded of Silent Hill 2, with its messages on the walls, its haunting music, and its monster designs. For Silent Hill f, set in Japan, we needed to create something unique yet reminiscent of the series. The monster designs were challenging; I had to consider the legacy of Silent Hill and innovate while maintaining its core identity. It might not feature the same blood-smeared, rusted scenery, but I hope fans will appreciate our vision and the world we've crafted."
Music plays a crucial role in Silent Hill f. The game features compositions from long-time Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage, known for his work on the Dynasty Warriors series. Inage described his contribution: "I have composed music for an unsettling yet beautiful world that uses imagery from shrines, blending ancient Japanese court music with ambient echoes. My goal was to evoke the protagonist's agony, internal conflict, fear, and other emotions through these sounds."While a specific release date remains under wraps, Silent Hill f is confirmed to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This latest installment promises to blend the series' traditional horror elements with a fresh narrative and setting, inviting players into a hauntingly beautiful journey through 1960s Japan.
