Despite mixed initial reactions, the PS5 Pro's sales projections remain strong, according to industry analysts. The latest PS5 iteration also fuels speculation about a potential new handheld console.
Analyst Perspective on PS5 Pro Sales and Pricing
PS5 Pro's Enhanced Features Spark Handheld Console Speculation
The $700 PS5 Pro is projected to achieve sales comparable to the PS4 Pro, even with its higher price tag. Ampere Analysis' Piers Harding-Rolls notes a significant price difference between the standard PS5 and the Pro model (40-50%), far exceeding the PS4/PS4 Pro launch gap. They predict approximately 1.3 million PS5 Pro units sold during its November 2024 launch window, roughly 400,000 fewer than the PS4 Pro's initial launch sales.
Harding-Rolls acknowledges the price may dampen demand but believes PlayStation enthusiasts will prioritize the enhanced capabilities. The PS4 Pro ultimately sold around 14.5 million units, representing about 12% of total PS4 sales, with an estimated 13 million unit sell-through within five years. (Sell-through refers to direct consumer purchases from retailers.)
The PS5 Pro's improved GPU will enhance PSVR2 gaming with higher resolutions, according to lead architect Mark Cerny. While specific titles haven't been confirmed, the PS5 Pro's AI-assisted upscaling, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, will be compatible with PSVR2. The console also supports existing PS5 accessories like the PS Portal.
This PS Portal compatibility, coupled with previous rumors of a PlayStation handheld capable of running PS5 games, reignites speculation about a new portable console. Although unconfirmed, the PS5 Pro's advanced features could pave the way for a new handheld device.
