PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)
As of mid-January 2025, the elusive PlayStation 5 disc drive is back in stock at select US retailers, including PlayStation Direct and Amazon. However, given recent trends, this limited availability likely won't last.
The shortage stems partly from the launch of the PS5 Pro, a disc-less console. This, combined with the earlier release of the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition, has created a surge in demand for the separately sold disc drive attachment, particularly in the US, where supply has been severely constrained for months.
While some retailers have restocked, the situation remains precarious. As of January 15th, Amazon and PlayStation Direct offer the drive at its MSRP of $79.99. However, a third-party Walmart seller is offering it at a 50% markup ($122) with limited stock.
Where to Buy (As of January 15th):
Store | Price |
---|---|
Amazon | $79.99 |
PlayStation Direct | $79.99 |
Walmart (Reseller) | $122 |
PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits:
PlayStation Direct limits purchases to one disc drive per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.
The ongoing shortage, also impacting the UK since late 2024, is likely linked to the PS5 Pro's lack of a disc drive option. Gamers seeking the best PS5 experience and physical media compatibility must purchase the drive separately.
With major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy still showing the drive as out of stock, the shortage is far from resolved. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
