PlayStation Unveils New AAA Studio in Los Angeles
Sony Interactive Entertainment has quietly established a new, unannounced AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the company's 20th first-party studio and adds to its already impressive lineup of acclaimed developers. The studio is currently developing a highly anticipated, original AAA title for the PlayStation 5.
The news emerged via a recent job posting for a Project Senior Producer, which confirmed the existence of the newly-formed studio. The secrecy surrounding the project has naturally fueled speculation among gaming enthusiasts, eager for details about the studio's identity and upcoming game.
Several theories attempt to identify the team behind this new venture. One prominent possibility involves a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the studio's layoffs in July 2024. Approximately 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment, and a portion of this group may now form the core of the new Los Angeles studio. This is particularly intriguing given Bungie's previous work on the Gummybears incubation project.
Another compelling theory points to the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran of the Call of Duty franchise. Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, a studio working on a PS5 AAA title before its closure in March 2024. Following Deviation Games' dissolution, many former employees joined PlayStation, leading to speculation that Blundell's team is now the basis for this new internal studio. Given the longer timeframe since Blundell's team's formation, this theory holds significant weight.
The exact nature of the game under development remains shrouded in mystery. However, fans speculate it may be a continuation or a reboot of Deviation Games' previous project. While a formal announcement from Sony is likely still some time away, the confirmation of this new studio is exciting news for PlayStation fans, adding another highly anticipated title to the company's already impressive future release pipeline.
