Mastering Path of Exile 2's Expedition Endgame: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame system from the original game. This guide details how to navigate Expeditions, optimize explosive placement, utilize the passive skill tree, and maximize rewards.

Understanding Expeditions

Four major endgame events – Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions – punctuate the PoE 2 Atlas map. Expedition map nodes are identifiable by a light blue, spiral-shaped icon. An Expedition Precursor Tablet, placed in a completed Lost Tower slot on the Atlas, guarantees an Expedition encounter.

Upon entering an Expedition map, locate the central Detonator and four NPCs. The NPCs offer basic instructions, but mastering the mechanics requires further understanding. The core gameplay revolves around strategically deploying explosives near markers to trigger events:

  • Red Markers: Detonating explosives near these spawns Runic Monsters. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased elemental damage from monsters but higher item rarity from chests).
  • Black Markers (Spiral Symbol): Explosives near these markers spawn Excavated Chests containing Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and high-tier gear.

The Explosives UI (bottom-right) shows the area of effect (AoE). Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal farming. After placing explosives, interact with the Detonator to initiate the event. Death resets the map, but players can strategically retreat and return later.

Expedition Pinnacle Maps and Olroth

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These Logbooks, when placed in the Expedition Map device in your hideout (accessed via Dannig), open unique Expedition maps. These maps offer significantly more explosives than standard Expeditions.

The Pinnacle Boss, Olroth, has a chance to spawn in these maps (higher map level increases the chance). Olroth's location is indicated by a skull on the minimap. Defeating Olroth awards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, valuable currency, and exclusive unique items.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Located within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances the Expedition experience. It's accessed via the Atlas Map's top-left menu. The tree features Notable nodes and difficulty-increasing nodes for Logbooks and Olroth. Defeating Olroth grants 2x skill points, necessitating increased difficulty for each new Notable node.

Notable Passive Node Recommendations:

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Subsequently, consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further reward enhancements, accepting increased difficulty. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to its significant reduction in explosive count.

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are the primary rewards, each used to trade with specific vendors for particular gear types:

Reward Vendor Gear Type
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen Belts and Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig Used to acquire other Artifacts
Exotic Coinage All Vendors Inventory Refresh

Remember, each Expedition features only one vendor. Exotic Coinage refreshes any vendor's inventory. Expedition Logbooks, dropped from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, are crucial for accessing Pinnacle Maps and confronting Olroth.

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of Path of Exile 2's Expedition system, empowering players to effectively navigate this challenging yet rewarding endgame content.
