Nintendo 64 Classic Returns to Modern Consoles

Doom 64's Potential Next-Gen Debut: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Versions Hinted at by ESRB Update

Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential imminent release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While Bethesda and id Software remain officially silent, this ESRB update strongly indicates a new port is in the works.

The original Doom 64, a Nintendo 64 exclusive, received a remastered release for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, featuring enhanced visuals and a new level. Now, it seems this enhanced version is poised for a current-gen upgrade.

The updated ESRB listing for Doom 64 now includes PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as target platforms. This is a significant indicator of an impending release, as developers typically submit games to the ESRB only when they are close to launch. Past instances, such as the 2023 Felix the Cat re-release, demonstrate the ESRB's ratings often precede official announcements.

ESRB Rating Signals Imminent Release of Doom 64 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S

Given past trends, a release could be just months away. While the ESRB listing doesn't mention a PC version, the 2020 port included a Steam release, and PC players can already experience Doom 64 through modding existing Doom titles. Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom games suggests a similar approach for Doom 64 is possible.

Looking beyond Doom 64, fans can anticipate Doom: The Dark Ages, rumored for a 2025 release with a potential announcement in January. Re-releasing classic titles like Doom 64 provides a perfect bridge to the next main installment in the franchise, allowing players to revisit beloved experiences while eagerly awaiting the future of the Doom universe.
