Announcing Ananta: The Formerly Known as Project Mugen Open-World RPG
Remember Project Mugen, the highly anticipated urban open-world RPG from Naked Rain and NetEase? It's had a name change! Now known as Ananta, this title, first unveiled at Gamescom 2023, has finally released a new trailer after a long silence. More information is promised on December 5th, but for now, feast your eyes on the official trailer:
The Mystery of the Name Change
The developers haven't yet commented on the reason for the name change. Interestingly, "Ananta" means "infinite" in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of "Mugen" (also "infinite"). The Chinese title reinforces this thematic consistency.
The gaming community is divided on the rebranding, but there's universal relief that the project hasn't been cancelled. Comparisons are already being drawn with Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually striking, its lack of gameplay footage leaves Neverness to Everness seemingly ahead in the eyes of many players. Personally, I find Ananta's aesthetic more captivating.
A Curious Turn of Events
Adding to the intrigue, the Project Mugen team has deleted all their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of video views. Only their Discord server remains, simply renamed to reflect the title change. This unexpected move has left many gamers puzzled, as a simple renaming of existing accounts would have seemed a more logical approach.
In Ananta, players assume the role of an Infinite Trigger, a paranormal investigator battling supernatural chaos. The cast includes characters like Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
