Simu Liu, the star of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is spearheading efforts to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively working with rights holders to bring the video game to the big screen.
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, vanished a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
This seemingly dashed hope for a Sleeping Dogs movie has been reignited by Liu’s intervention. The success of his endeavor to secure the rights and move the project forward remains uncertain.
Released in 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Sleeping Dogs follows undercover detective Wei Shen as he navigates the treacherous world of Hong Kong's Triad gangs. Critically acclaimed—earning an 8/10 from IGN—the game, despite its popularity, never received a sequel.
