Top horror studio Blumhouse is celebrating its 15th anniversary by bringing back the 2022 hit film M3GAN to theaters. This move comes ahead of the much-anticipated sequel, M3GAN 2.0, set to release on June 27. The limited theatrical engagement is not just a re-run; it includes innovative features that have sparked controversy due to their encouragement of smartphone use in theaters.
As part of the Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder is set to screen M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle, in one-night-only events. These screenings will incorporate Meta's "Movie Mate" technology, allowing audience members to engage directly with M3GAN through a chatbot and access exclusive content in real-time on their second screens.
"Movie Mate is only available to moviegoers who are in a theater, and works by DM'ing the Instagram account @M3GAN account to start the experience," Blumhouse explained in a report published by Variety. This technology aims to enhance and elevate the 'second screen' viewing experience, generating excitement ahead of M3GAN 2.0's release.
Fans can look forward to sneak peeks, exclusive recorded messages from directors and talent associated with the films, and surprise special appearances in select markets. However, this approach has raised concerns about its impact on the traditional theatrical experience. While it's innovative, it may undermine the core essence of watching movies in theaters, which is traditionally a distraction-free environment.
The M3GAN screenings are scheduled for April 30 across various theaters nationwide, with Annabelle following on May 7, and Ma on May 14. As M3GAN 2.0 approaches its premiere on June 27, only time will tell how audiences will respond to this unique blend of technology and cinema. Hopefully, this trend won't extend to regular screenings anytime soon, preserving the magic of the traditional movie-going experience.
