Exciting news for fans of the legendary RPG series: Suikoden is making a comeback with Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG developed by Konami in collaboration with MYTHRIL. Set to be released on Android and iOS platforms, this free-to-play game doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but it's expected to hit the market later this year.
For those unfamiliar, Suikoden first graced the gaming world in 1995. Created by Yoshitaka Murayama and brought to life by Konami, the series draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. Known as Suikoden in Japan, it has captivated players with its intricate tales of political intrigue, the mystical True Runes, and the gathering of the 108 Stars of Destiny. Over the years, the franchise has seen 11 entries, including spin-offs, with the last release in 2012. Now, rather than a direct sequel or a full-scale revival, Konami is introducing Suikoden STAR LEAP, a mobile game that promises to reignite the series' flame.
What’s in Store?
Suikoden STAR LEAP will feature an entirely new cast of characters, yet it stays true to the series' core concept of assembling 108 heroes. Embracing the classic Suikoden aesthetic, the game uses pixel art to evoke nostalgia while introducing fresh elements. Below is a teaser trailer to give you a sneak peek:
The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes pivotal to the world's creation. The protagonist, Hou, the son of the village chief, celebrates his first successful hunt only for disaster to strike as the village is attacked. Driven by the chaos, Hou embarks on a quest to restore peace, joined by Hisui, his emotionally suppressed servant; Shirin, his childhood friend with a fervent sense of justice; and Shapur, a former general now serving as a butler.
While the announcement of Suikoden STAR LEAP has stirred excitement, it has also sparked mixed feelings among the fanbase. Long-time enthusiasts have been yearning for a proper continuation of the series, and the introduction of a gacha-based mobile game has left some feeling uncertain about its direction.
We'll have a clearer picture of Suikoden STAR LEAP once it's released. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
