Jason Momoa, known for his role as Aquaman in the previous DC Extended Universe, is set to bring the iconic character Lobo to life in the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, slated for release in June 2026. Lobo, an alien interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia, is characterized by his superhuman strength and immortality. Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in Omega Men #3 in 1983 and is the last surviving member of his now-extinct race, much like Superman.
Momoa has expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating that Lobo is his favorite comic book character. He has drawn parallels between himself and Lobo, highlighting aesthetic similarities. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Momoa provided a glimpse into what fans can expect from Lobo's appearance in the film. He emphasized his dedication to the character, noting that the portrayal would be faithful to the source material, with a particular focus on Lobo's rough and gruff demeanor and his iconic bike.
However, Momoa also clarified that Lobo's role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow would be brief, emphasizing that the film primarily focuses on Supergirl. He said, "It’s her movie, so it's great. I just come in for a little bit."
The film, directed by James Gunn, began filming in January, with Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon, taking on the titular role of Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. Gunn shared the first image of Alcock as Supergirl on Bluesky, marking the start of production.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is heavily inspired by the graphic novel of the same name by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Norgueira. The story follows an alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll, played by Eve Ridley, who seeks Supergirl's help to avenge her father's murder by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts. The cast also includes David Krumholtz as Supergirl's father Zor-El and Emily Beecham as her mother.
Following Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the DCU will release Clayface in September 2026. Before that, fans can look forward to James Gunn's Superman hitting theaters this summer, marking the first film in the new DCU lineup.
