Insider: MultiVersus is on the verge of shutting down: Warner Bros. fighting game lost 99% of its players

The future of MultiVersus hangs in the balance. Season 5, launching in early February, may be its last stand, according to industry insider AusilMV. AusilMV cites a trusted source indicating the season is a final attempt to revive the game's flagging fortunes. While currently just a rumor, the situation is undeniably precarious.

The game's initial 2022 launch was a resounding success, boasting a peak of 153,000 concurrent Steam players. However, a dramatic 99% player drop followed swiftly, leading Warner Bros. Games to shut down the project in June 2023, controversially labeling it an "open beta test." A relaunch with updates occurred in May 2024, but failed to recapture its initial popularity.

This relaunch, effectively Season 5, represents a make-or-break moment for MultiVersus. The developers' decision to retroactively classify the 2022 release as a beta, particularly given the game's initial success and the subsequent disappointment of premium edition purchasers, remains a point of contention. The success or failure of Season 5 will likely determine the game's ultimate fate.
