PlayStation Productions Unveils Ambitious Slate of Game Adaptations at CES 2025
PlayStation Productions made a splash at CES 2025, announcing a wave of new video game adaptations set for release in 2025 and beyond. The announcements, made on January 7th, included anime series, films, and a new season of a hit TV show.
Among the highlights:
- Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime: A new anime series based on the Ghost of Tsushima multiplayer mode, Legends, is in production with Crunchyroll and Aniplex, slated for a 2027 premiere on Crunchyroll. Takanobu Mizumo will direct, with Gen Urobuchi handling the story, and Sony Music contributing the soundtrack.
- Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 Films: Feature films based on Horizon Zero Dawn (produced by Sony Pictures) and Helldivers 2 (produced by Columbia Pictures) are officially in development, though details remain scarce.
-
Until Dawn Film Adaptation: A film adaptation of Until Dawn is set for release on April 25, 2025.
-
The Last of Us Season Two: Neil Druckmann revealed a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, expanding the story to encompass characters like Abby and Dina from The Last of Us Part II.
PlayStation Productions' Expanding Universe
This latest announcement underscores PlayStation's growing commitment to adapting its successful game franchises for other media. While past adaptations like the Resident Evil and Silent Hill films had mixed reception, recent successes such as Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023) have demonstrated the potential for profitability and audience appeal.
The Twisted Metal series on Peacock, though not as critically acclaimed as The Last of Us, also saw a second season completed in late 2024 (release date pending). Furthermore, films based on Days Gone and a God of War TV series are also in various stages of development, along with a sequel to the Uncharted movie.
The future looks bright for PlayStation Productions, suggesting that many more beloved PlayStation franchises could be adapted into films and television shows in the years to come.
