Unlike the familiar rain-slicked streets of Los Angeles, Shore and Brown envisioned a "hopepunk" Tokyo for 2015, distinct from its cinematic counterparts. While acknowledging the influence of classic cyberpunk works, they consciously avoided direct homage, drawing inspiration from post-3.11 Tohoku Disaster Japanese media and contemporary Japanese society. Brown describes their Tokyo as a seemingly utopian paradise masking a brutal underbelly, a parallel to the decaying Los Angeles of the original films.
Set in 2015, Tokyo Nexus stands as a standalone story within the larger franchise. While subtle nods to the films exist, it's accessible to newcomers. The narrative builds upon previous entries like Blade Runner: Origins and Blade Runner: 2019, exploring unanswered questions about the Kalanthia War and Tyrell Corporation's Replicant monopoly, hinting at a larger inter-organizational conflict.
Central to the story is the partnership between Mead, a hardened human, and Stix, a Replicant. Their bond, described as a "platonic life-partnership," forms the emotional core, showcasing their codependency and struggle for survival amidst a harsh reality.
The plot unfolds amidst a conflict involving Tyrell Corp, the Yakuza, and Cheshire, a rising competitor aiming to challenge Tyrell's Replicant market dominance. Cheshire's introduction of a new military-grade Replicant adds another layer of intrigue.
