The thrill of parrying an enemy attack, turning their aggression into a devastating counter-strike, is a hallmark of great action games. If that's the kind of *Avowed* experience you crave, here's how to master the art of the parry.
How to Unlock Parry in Avowed

Parrying in Avowed isn't an automatic skill; you'll need to unlock it. Navigate to the menu, select "Abilities," then the "Ranger" tab. The Parry ability is located in the top middle column. To unlock it, you must first allocate an Ability point to any of the three core skill trees. Once that's done, Parry is yours.
Parry has three ranks, detailed below:
Rank | Player Level Requirement | Level Description |
1 | N/A (1 Point Spent) | Unlocks Parry. |
2 | Player Level 5 | Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, inflicting greater Stun on enemies. |
3 | Player Level 8 | Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, inflicting greater Stun on enemies. |
At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," allowing you to parry projectiles like arrows.
How to Parry Attacks in Avowed

Successful parrying requires precise timing—block just before an enemy attack connects. You'll hear a metallic clang and see a visual cue as the enemy stumbles. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's far less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Parrying Limitations
Not all attacks are parryable. A red circle indicates attacks requiring a dodge instead. Similarly, not all weapons can parry. Single-handed and two-handed weapons generally work (unless in your off-hand), as do shields in the off-hand. Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.
What Parrying Does (and Why You Should Use It)
Parrying stuns attackers, creating an opening for significant damage. It's a fantastic defensive and offensive tool, particularly for melee builds. Ranged characters may find less use for it. However, Avowed's easy respec system allows for adjustments if you change your mind.
