Avowed's Character Creation: A Deep Dive into Backgrounds

Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to customize their character's physical appearance and select a Background, shaping their backstory and initial narrative. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Every Background in Avowed Listed

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. While each provides unique dialogue options and a starting weapon (all common-quality, one-handed melee weapons), all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice. The key difference lies in the narrative context they provide.

  • Arcane Scholar: This scholarly character hails from Bragganhyl Academy, their treatise on soul lineages causing conflict with a local lord. Imprisoned, they were recruited by the emperor for the imperial archives. Their expertise lies in the occult, legal matters, history, and poetry.

  • Court Augur: This Background features a tragic past, their mystical insights leading to suspicion and exile after a village crop failure. The emperor, recognizing their abilities, appointed them as a personal mystic. Their connection to the spiritual realm provides unique dialogue options related to magic and the Gods. This is ideal for players envisioning a wizard-like character.

  • Noble Scion: A product of a wealthy, yet morally corrupt noble family, this character's family's downfall led them to seek the emperor's protection. Their noble lineage makes them a valuable asset to the empire. This Background suits players who prefer loyalty to the empire.

  • Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, this character's humble beginnings and preference for wilderness over city life make them a skilled tracker and spy for the empire. This is perfect for players favoring a hunter-style character.

  • War Hero: Their bravery in quelling a Skaenite uprising earned them a place among elite warriors, showcasing their loyalty and resilience. This Background is suited to players who want to roleplay a warrior.

Starting Weapons: A Common Thread

An Avowed Starting Weapon

Each Background starts with a common-quality, one-handed melee weapon:

  • Arcane Scholar – Common Dagger
  • Court Augur – Common Mace
  • Noble Scion – Common Sword
  • Vanguard Scout – Common Axe
  • War Hero – Common Spear

These weapons, found near a shipwreck during the "On Strange Shores" quest, are easily replaceable, making Background selection primarily a narrative choice.

Ultimately, the best Background is the one that best suits your desired roleplaying experience.

Avowed is available now on PC and Xbox.
