Ubisoft's latest addition to the beloved stealth-action open-world franchise, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has finally arrived, transporting players to 16th-century Japan with protagonists Naoe and Yasuke. As the 14th entry in the core series, it's time to reflect on where it stands among its predecessors. Since 2007, when Desmond Miles first entered the Animus to embody Altaïr, the series has evolved significantly. Today, we're focusing solely on the mainline games, excluding mobile, side-scrolling, VR entries, and spin-offs like Bloodlines or Liberation.
My personal journey through the Assassin's Creed saga has led me to rank these games based on enjoyment. Here's a glimpse into my tier list:
For me, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remains the pinnacle of the series, earning a spot in the S-tier. Its blend of island exploration, thrilling ship combat, and vibrant characters creates an unparalleled Assassin’s Creed experience. Joining it in the S-tier is Assassin’s Creed 2, the game that truly propelled the franchise into the spotlight. Valhalla secures an A-tier position, perhaps unexpectedly, but its Viking-inspired combat and the addictive Orlog minigame won me over. Unity also sits in the A-tier, thanks to its breathtaking recreation of French Revolution-era Paris, which continues to impress even a decade later.
Do you share my views, or do you believe Valhalla is overly bloated? Perhaps you think Assassin’s Creed 2 is overrated? I invite you to create your own tier list and compare your S, A, B, C, and D rankings with the IGN community. Dive in and let your voice be heard.
