A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Nintendo Switch Online boasts a substantial Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the Switch eShop. Ten exceptional games are highlighted – four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this port provides a worthwhile experience, offering a compelling comparison and a more streamlined playthrough. Steel Empire is a captivating title, enjoyable even for those not typically drawn to the genre.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
While the Mega Man X console series saw a decline, the Game Boy Advance birthed a worthy successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an exceptional side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry exhibits some minor imperfections in presentation. These rough edges are refined in later installments, but the first game remains the ideal starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry is justified, as Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer vastly different, yet equally compelling gameplay experiences. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The core concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While the series' later entries show diminishing returns, the original remains highly entertaining.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system, while encouraging grinding, is complemented by highly engaging gameplay. The unique setting and hidden secrets further enhance its appeal, making it a standout third-party Game Boy Advance title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae enjoyed cult status, but limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, significantly broadened its audience. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, ensuring her presence across subsequent console generations. Its origins are somewhat ambiguous, stemming from an unreleased Game Boy Advance title, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a Game Boy Advance title (its origin console), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit. Its blend of quirky humor and compelling narratives makes it a standout.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, players utilize their abilities to save others while unraveling the mystery surrounding their own death. This captivating title, initially overlooked on the Nintendo DS, deserves recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
The World Ends With You is a top-tier Nintendo DS title, ideally experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version serves as a suitable alternative for those without access to a Nintendo DS. Its exceptional design makes it a must-play.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection compiles all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to its improved button controls replacing the gimmicky touch controls of the original. However, all three games in the collection are recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
The Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem. This port, while not perfectly replicating the original experience, offers a playable version. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
